Once again – for the fourth time in nine years – the UK electorate is being asked to endorse a plainly corrupted, plainly anti-democratic political system that is simply not fit for purpose. Only this time, against the backdrop of it’s appalling complicity in what is now an undeniable genocide of massive proportions in Gaza, perpetrated by the UK’s apparently unimpeachable ally Israel.
And once again, there will be no viable way for millions of plainly unrepresented voters to formally register their disapproval and rejection of that system and all it represents. That is scandalous at the best of times. In the current climate, it’s actually disgusting.
Nevertheless, for once, this promises to be an extremely important election with massive ramifications for the future of the UK and wider world, whatever happens on July 4th.
From a progressive/reformist point of view, the least worst outcome would be a hung parliament resulting in a ‘rainbow’ coalition, with Labour forced to work closely with the Lib Dems, the SNP, the Green Party and a likely influx of unashamedly anti-genocide independents. Anything else is bound to just be more of the same. Or worse.
In my opinion, a Labour majority with Keir Starmer and his genocide backing army of Blair clones in power would be just as much of a regressive establishment nightmare as another Tory majority, while any coalition involving the Tories still calling the shots is bound to be a total disaster.
In the UK’s ludicrous First Past The Post electoral system, the only way to help bring about this ‘rainbow’ coalition is to hold your nose and vote tactically for whoever realistically has a chance of defeating the Tories (even Labour) and Labour (unless it’s a Tory) in their respective strongholds (on this occasion, and/or whoever is standing on a genuinely anti-genocide platform, be they strongly favoured independents, Greens or whoever else).
None of that will be straightforward, however. Widespread rejection of the UK political system’s unflinching complicity with Israel’s undeniable ongoing genocide in Gaza (and now also the West Bank) will almost certainly be a major factor on polling day.
So much so, that Starmer is literally in danger of losing his seat to the very popular and very organised independent Andrew Feinstein who is standing against him on an unashamedly anti-genocide, anti-Starmer platform. Meaning that Labour could conceivably win the most seats AND lose their leader … which would, of course, be extremely comical …
One thing is for sure: there will definitely be some serious upsets and potentially some big names losing their seats. Which is something to look forward to at least…
It’s all pretty much unprecedented, and very hard to predict the impact the anti-genocide block will have. I fear that an incredibly low turnout overall is highly likely – which is, of course, just one reason why any true democracy should always have a formal and binding None of the Above option on ballot papers, so that those wishing to formally reject all that’s on offer can actually do so, instead of just disengaging and being written off as ‘apathetic’.
NOTA UK will, as always, be banging the drum for inclusion of NOTA on ballot papers, as much as our extremely limited resources allow. If you’d like to support our efforts, please consider making a one off or regular donation via our paypal.
